These woven copper placemats were inspired by traditional tea mats found in Japan. I wanted to capture the essence of delicacy in woven form and apply it to a modern material.

The choice to weave not with a natural material but with a fabricated metal, was not only an aesthetic decision, but also an attempt to ignite an element of curiosity within the user.  To create an object that in some way is juxtaposed I hope aids in drawing people back in to the present moment, much like the act of drinking tea can do.

I wanted to create a piece which encouraged the user to slow down, to follow the lines and trace the curves of the crafting of such an item.

These placemats are for sale in Comins Tea House, Bath and can also be commissioned directly.
