This den was commissioned by Montessori Place School in Sussex. For their nursery children I built a space that was engaging and also cosy. It has a tunnel like front to the space and then also opens out in to a circular shaped space at one end, to encourage the children to stop and rest here not simply pass through.

This is a living willow structure which means that the pod is alive. I planted each willow length in to fertile soil and wove the living sticks together. This way the piece grows and thickens over time. This not only provides a piece that can last a lot longer but also encourages a sense of responsibility amongst the children who use it, as they can be given the chance to tend to the pruning of the structure and take care of it themselves.
